Changes to Empty Property Relief
(England and Wales)

If you previously received empty property relief on any of your properties, changes that took effect from 1st April 2008 may have significantly increased your business rates liability.

It is not too late to take action. Taking action now could limit the impact of the new regulations and save you money.

If you own or rent an unoccupied factory, warehouse, or other industrial property, you will have been receiving 100% relief on your rate liability.

From 1st April 2008 this relief has ceased and you are now liable for the full business rates payable on your property.

If you own or rent an unoccupied shop, office, or other non-industrial property, you will have been receiving 50% relief on your rate liability.

From 1st April 2008 this relief has ceased and you are now liable for the full business rates payable on your property.

What can you do to limit these increases?
